Meet one of the farmers

WE NO LONGER USE CLIVES PIG'S BUT HAVE KEPT HIS DETAILS ON THE SITE BECAUSE HE WAS SO INSPIRATIONAL TO US WHEN WE STARTED.

Clive Sugg started pig farming with just 6 pigs for the family, he was fed up with buying second-rate pork from the supermarkets and thought it would be wonderful to have his own.

It was a fast learning curve for him and his partner Kate, but they soon fell in love with the pigs and started breeding them. Clive is really a big softy and seems to save a lot of animals “I think you have to really love animals to be any livestock farmer, I love my pigs as much as my wife”, he chuckles to himself as Kate and Clive plan to marry later in the year.

As well as their lovely pig, Clive and Kate keep over 120 ex-battery farm chickens that they saved from being put down, “after a settling-in period, these chickens start to lay again, producing all manner of shapes and sizes of eggs” Clive adds. They also have 3 magnificent turkeys, saved as pets from last Christmas and about 100 ‘boiler hens’ equally well kept and simply delicious free-range chickens. However, there is still great debate in the Sugg household about whether to bring one of their three Kunekune piglets into the house as a pet, although both smitten with the cute little animal, Clive is yet to be convinced!

Pigs have such great personalities, all quite different. Some are bold as brass and some more passive but they are undoubtedly very cleaver animals.
